Champix® (varenicline)- 0.5mg, 1mg

Champix® (varenicline)- 0.5mg, 1mg

Champix contains no nicotine and works to relieve the craving and withdrawal symptoms associated with giving up smoking. The treatment course is usually for 12 weeks, however a further 12 weeks of treatment may be appropriate in some scenarios. Before commencing treatment, you should set a quit date and start Champix 1- 2 weeks before this date.

Willpower is crucial when giving up smoking especially in social situations. Indeed, the most successful quitters are motivated to stop. You may find it helpful to take up a new hobby or make plans for when you finish the 12 week course. Consider telling your friends, colleagues and family that you're trying to quit so they can offer support by not smoking around you. You may also need to find other ways to take breaks or socialise like going for walks.

Usage
Champix stimulates nicotinic receptors in the brain, which relieves the craving and withdrawal symptoms you can get when you stop smoking. It also helps prevent nicotine from attaching to the receptors in the first place, so if you do relapse and have a cigarette, the nicotine you inhale will have a less enjoyable effect.

Directions
Adults:
– Set a quit date and start Champix 1-2 weeks before the date
– Start with one 0.5mg tablet daily for 3 days, then twice daily for 4 days
– Continue with 1mg twice daily for the rest of the course (12 weeks total)

Take tablets regularly at the same time each day, if you forget a dose take it as soon as you remember except it is within 3-4 hours of your next dose in which case forget the missed dose and carry on as normal.
