Emergency Hormonal Contraception- Levonorgestrel

Also known as the 'Morning After Pill' comes in two pills that differ in the active component. This particular one contains a progesterone hormone called levonorgestrel (1500mcg) and can be taken up 72 hours after unprotected sex.  It prevents pregnancy by stopping the ovaries from ovulating or by stopping sperm from fertilising an egg if it had already been released.

Please be aware its effectiveness decreases with time and it is most effective if taken within 24 hours of unprotected sex.

Usage
Women of Childbearing Age: Swallow 1 tablet as soon as possible after unprotected sex.

You will need to take another Levonorgestrel if you are sick within three hours of taking the initial tablet.

Warnings
If after taking Levonorgestrel your period is late by more than 5 days or/and you experience symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, dizziness etc., you should take a pregnancy test.

Repeated administration within a menstrual cycle is not advisable because of the possibility of disturbance of the cycle.

Use of emergency contraception does not replace the necessary precautions against sexually transmitted diseases.

After using emergency contraception it is recommended to use a local barrier method (e.g. condom, diaphragm spermicide, cervical cap) until the next menstrual period starts.
