PrEP (Tenofovir 245mg/ Emtricitabine 200mg)

PrEP is short for Pre- exposure Prophylaxis (for HIV). Currently, a combined preparation of Tenofovir & Emtricitabine is what is used as PrEP.

PrEP prevents HIV negative people from getting infected with HIV. Studies have shown it to be almost 100% effective, if used correctly and with the right support. It is advisable to consider it if......

  • You have unprotected sex with someone from a *country where HIV is common
  • You have unprotected sex with an LGBT person
  • Your sexual partner has HIV & is not undetectable on treatment

WESIE Integrative Pharmacy can prescribe PrEP for you if you are over 18 and have been confirmed as HIV negative. However, in order to ensure it is prescribed *safely- we ask for the following:

1. Confirmation of a recent HIV negative test result
2. Confirmation of your Hepatitis B Status

*A full sexual health screen is recommended every 3 months whilst using PrEP

In addition, as part of our clinical check we will conduct a 'mini- consultation' with you over the phone or via video (if preferred) to ascertain if PrEP is the most appropriate option for you and to counsel you on its usage.

Usage: There are two main ways to use PrEP, which generally depends on your sexual preferences.
  • Once Daily: This method ensures you always have PrEP in your system, hence are always protected. Its advisable to use this approach if you are at risk of exposure on 4 or more occasions every week
  • 'On Demand': This involves taking PrEP on an as needed basis. This method is only suitable for gay and bisexual men

HIV Protection During Vaginal Sex: 1 Tablet Daily (around the same time) for seven days before sex, continue to take daily whilst having sex and then for seven days after your last episode of unprotected sex
'On Demand': 2 Tablets 2 to 24 hours before sex, then daily (if having sex daily for a few days), and then 1 tablet daily for 2 days after your last episode of sex

Side Effects: Mostly minor and may include headaches, diarrhoea, mild nausea and bloating, if used regularly long term it can affect your kidney function and thin your bones (however, these effects are reversible on stopping treatments)

  • Missed Doses: Missing the odd dose if taking regularly for 7 days is permissible, but should not exceed one missed dose for vaginal sex, and three for anal sex over a 7 day week period
  • Consider keeping a supply of PrEP handy if you are regularly at risk of getting HIV
  • An annual kidney function test is advisable, as a minimum
  • A HIV test is advisable 6 weeks after unprotected anal sex
  • If you have not taken PrEP before sex and feel you're at risk, then contact a sexual health clinic or local A&E department immediately for PEP (Post-exposure prophylaxis)
