Psyllium Husks

Psyllium Husks (Plantago psyllium)

Sometimes referred to as Ispaghula. It is native to the Mediterranean, North Africa and Western Asia but widely cultivated now. It improves regularity and functionality of the intestines and is commonly used for constipation, diarrhoea, irritable bowel syndrome. There is some evidence to say it can help lower blood glucose levels by helping to regulate insulin release hence improve diabetes management. It can also help lower the risk of heart disease by lowering cholesterol.

Usage
Adults:
Constipation: 10-30 grams daily in 2-3 divided doses 
Cholesterol: 7 grams daily
Diabetes: 15 grams daily
Children:
    - Constipation (6- 12 year olds): 5- 15 grams in two to three divided doses daily

Warnings
Take each dose with a full glass of water
Can cause allergy's and sensitisation
Long term use with meals can lead to nutrient deficiencies, especially minerals
Avoid taking at the same times as medication

Useful Information
Take for at least 3 weeks to lower cholesterol or blood glucose (with type 2 diabetes)
It can help lower blood pressure if used for up to one month
Side Effects: Flatulence & bloating, choking if inadequate water taken
Active Constituents: Its main active constituent is its mucilage content which is hydrophilic i.e attracts and binds water.
