ellaOne 30mg Tablet, 1

Emergency Hormonal Contraception- ellaOne 30mg

EllaOne is an emergency contraceptive pill, commonly known as a morning after pill. It contains ulipristal which prevents or delays your ovaries from ovulating (releasing an egg) thus preventing fertilization and pregnancy. It should be taken within 120 hours (5 days) of unprotected sex or if your usual contraceptive method has failed (e.g. a condom breaks). However, its effectiveness decreases with time.

Women of Childbearing age: Swallow one tablet whole as soon as possible after (but within 120 hours) unprotected sex

If you are sick within 3hrs of taking ellaOne, you will need to take another tablet as soon as possible.

After taking the tablet, your next period may be a few days early or late. However, if your period is more than 5 days late, unusually light or heavy; or if you experience symptoms such as abdominal (stomach) pain, breast tenderness, vomiting or nausea, you may be pregnant. You should do a pregnancy test right away and see your doctor.

ellaOne is for occasional use only and is not a replacement for a regular contraceptive method.

An effective alternative to the morning after pill is the copper coil (also known as an intrauterine device (IUD). This can be fitted by a trained medical professional but must be done within 5 days of unprotected sex to be effective. We recommend taking the morning after pill, even if you wish to have a coil fitted, in case this doesn't happen within 5 days or unprotected sex.
